Not Every Traditional Gender Role Hard to Break

Saturday September 20, 2008
Sometimes it seems one of the job descriptions of stay-at-home dads is “misconception battler.” And there are plenty of ways to respond to or brush off idiotic comments. But sometimes a stereotype sticks, no matter how much work a SAHD does to try and dispel it. And a lot of the stress can come from the dad himself. One of the biggies is the wife-as-the-breadwinner role. Pretty much since man has existed, he has provided for his family. With it so ingrained, it can be hard to accept the role reversal, even if the dad willingly made that choice, as strange as that might seem to people not in his shoes. So how does a SAHD deal with it? Is it even really a problem? Is it one of those issues that with some time won’t matter? Regardless of what the answers are, this is one gender role that needs to be addressed every now and then so everyone involved feels comfortable in their shoes.
