Stay-at-Home Dad Takes Safety Into His Own Hands

From David Worford, About.com GuideDecember 1, 2008

Here is another way a stay-at-home dad is being proactive. After Vermont stay-at-home dad George DeCell’s daughter survived a close call from choking on a safety cap that was removed from an electrical outlet, he couldn’t just stand idle knowing those covers posed a significant hazzard that was far from safe.

He urged the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to change the standards on the saftey caps to prevent choking. He was denied, so he decided to design his own. He made them bigger and with air holes in them to significantly reduce the chance of choking. DeCell also contacted hospitals and tells the Boston Globe that nearly 40 have supported him and contacted the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on the issue. Still, the commission has denied a second request by the dad for changes. Hopefully a subsequent call for action won’t be so quickly pushed to the side.

Regardless, he has done something great to ensure better safety of children. And the safety of our kids may be the most important task SAHDs are charged with.
