Some Stay-at-Home Dad Resolutions

Wednesday December 31, 2008

I’ve never been one for resolutions. I sort of figure, what’s the point of making a point of saying you’ll do something you should be doing anyway but likely won’t get to when it comes time to follow through. And then, why just do this at the start of a new year? I know, I know, new beginnings and all that.

As stay-at-home dads, though, there are many areas we can resolve to do better. Of course each SAHD has his own circumstances, and hopefully most of us feel pretty good about what we’re up to. But I suppose it never hurts to take stock of our situations.

So what are some potentially big stay-at-home dad resolutions out there? I can think of a few possibilities. Be more patient with the kids. Be more patient with the working spouse. Learn to cook better, more, healthier. Learn to clean the house – well, you know, strive to actually clean the house. Find more me time. Find more time with the wife. Meet other stay-at-home dads. Volunteer more. Instantly forgive anyone who decides I should not be in this role. Do the same to those who think they know how to parent my kids better than I do. Excel in my interests. Involve the kids in my interests. Get lost in their interests. Continually teach them new things. Stay active. Keep the mind fresh. Avoid burnout. And most importantly, keep the loving the gig.

Obviously, there are many, many more. And hopefully, they are all something we won’t brush off once February comes and around.
