With young kids running around, and messing up the house, tools that will help with quick clean ups are always welcome. Hoover's Slider fits the bill fairly well.
The broom, which is really a miniature vacuum cleaner, is great for small and isolated problems with dirt on hard or soft surfaces. It doesn't have the capacity, both for the dirt and its running charge, to be a complete answer to a manual broom or to clean every floor in the house. But it is a good compliment, especially if you are having problems getting up dirt in corners or under furniture.
It works well on hard surfaces and carpet, which makes it handy in most rooms of the house. Although with a bigger mess, it can take a minute to get all the dirt up, and the Slider does have some tendency to push bigger pieces around instead of sucking it up.
Being cordless, the Slider needs to be charged. It requires a 16-hour charge before initial use and can be charged constantly when it is not being used. This is a good idea considering there is nothing to really indicate how long a single charge is good for, or if the battery is running low. This can leave you in the lurch for that clean-up job if you haven't kept the broom plugged in. Although, it does have a handy battery-saving feature where the unit switches itself off if the handle is upright.
Hoover also recommends that you empty and clean the dirt compartment after every use. The size of the vacuum makes this a necessity, because there won't be any room in the dirt tray for the next use if you don't.
The Slider retails for $49.99 according to the Hoover website, but shop around at different retail locations for a decent discount. That makes it a good price for the job it is intended to do the quick pick-up.
